£1,600,000 TUNNEL.

THROUGH C ASCADE MOUNTAINS. A tunnel, seven and tliree-quarter miles lout;, and penetrating the Cascade Mountains, deserihed as one ot the greatest construction projects, m the history of railways, has been started. according to Mr Ralph Rudd, president of the Great Northern Railroad, quoted in a Reuter Chicago message. The cost will be 8,000.000 dollars (about 11,000.000). The tunnel will reach from Scenio, on the west, to Rums, on the east, and electrification of the lines will cost an additional 2.000.000 dollars (about £400,000). The tunnel will shorten the line by 18 miles and will lower the summit by 1000 feet. It will save one hour’s running time, and is expected to be completed before the end of 1028.
