The apnointee will he required to instruct locomotive men in the most economic and satisfactory methods of firing. and generally ensure the best, results in (lie use of real throughout llie service. The necessity for such appointment was summed up by the Inquiry Board in the following terms: —“The whole question of coal supply for the New Zealand railways is of such magnitude and complexity. and the financial aspect so important, that we strongly recommend that tills branch of railway management should he placed under the control of a technically trained ami qualified fuel engineer, who should I o responsible for the purchase and economic'use of all coal necessary, and we are of opinion that if such officer wore instructed to use every endeavour to overcome any difficulties met with ‘ oi utilising V«r Zealand coals it should ho found within a very short time that, very little coal need he imported, and that great economy in the fuel hill would he effected.’’

Some weeks will he occupied in receiving and dealing with applications for the position, and it is not likely that the appointee will commence his duties until the end of .May. The salary is £GGS per annum.
