A DOWNPOUR.

The rain which commenced to fall yesterday afternoon at 1 o’clock, gradually increased in volume as night wore on and there was a- steady downpour from 7 p.m.. The rain continued to increase in volume and all night it fairly poured, there being no break till about 8 a.m. The extent of the downpour can be gleamed by the record for the 24 hours ended at 9 o’clock this morning which was the very substantial one of 5.75 inches. As a result- of the downpour the drains in the upper portions of the town were unable to cope with the water and there were overflows in various streets notably. in Healey Street, the water pouring down the road and flooding many houses of residents in" the vicinity. ,

The flood waters from Bealey Street flowed down Hampden Street. the scour cutting up the road badly, considerable damage anti inconvenience being caused to many of the householders in the vicinity whose houses were entered by the water while the hack yards resembled a lake. The river though in flood is not very high the rain haring been apparently a local fall.

There was an extremely heavy sea running this morning and the waves were dashing into the bank at the rear of Revell Street, cutting it away considerably and coining over the bank, which lias now a drop of 4 to 6 feet in places. Quite a large crowd gathered on the beach watching the dashing waves, which threw up a large amount of foam.
