On Sunday n party from Kokatahi numbering about, thirty had an enjoyable excursion ui Lake Kanieri. The party. divided in two, one contingent travelling by horseback by way of the Styx track to the head of the Lake, while the other party motored via Kanieri to the lake side. The motor launch was then utilised and ran across the l.ake to the eastern end where the two parties met. The whole party then came bark to the Lake Hotel where .Mr and -Mrs Tnlloeh had arranged a very attractive dinner. Later the party travelled in the launch to Dorothy Falls, where the parties divided for the home journey, one on horse back and the other returning in the launch to the motor cars on the end of the road and thence hack to Kanieri and Kokatahi. only two ladies of the party and two gentlemen making the round trip. The outing proved a very enjoyable one and is to he repeated in the near future. The track from Kokatahi to the Lake is in a somewhat rough state and the journey will he all the more enjoyable when the track is improved.

For some months past tho London manager of the Xew Zealand Meat Producers Board has been corresponding with the authorities concerned, with a view to seeing if Xew Zealand beef could not be included in the conditions of contract of the Italian Anny Aleat Contract. The conditions at the time required that the meat must he ol Brazilian or Argentine origin. It is pleasing now to announce that the last- meat- contract of the Italian Aimy waived the original conditions and now allows our Xew Zealand beef to ly> included in any Army .Meat C. ntract for the future.

The Union Islands, which were formerly under the control of the High Commissioner for the Western Pacific, are now under the control of tho Dominion of Xew Zealand. 'Pile first Order-in-Cuneil relating to this group (which is also known as the Tokelau Group), lias just been published and delegates to the Administrator of AVostorn Samoa the powers over the Union Islands which have been delegated to the Governor-General of Xew Zealand by the King. The Order-in-Counoil specifies the group as consisting of Faknofu, Xukunono, and Atafu and all small islands, islets, rocks and reefs depending on them.

At AVellington on Friday the Prime Alinister said:—“ATe will start the session at the- usual time,” when asked whether tho announcement of the Imperial Conference in October will cause nnv modification of the Government’s plans. As' the last farewells were being made prior to the Alatingamii’s departure from Wellington for Sydney on Friday last, the long line of streamers extending from the vessel to the wharf were broken by the arrival alongside of a man and woman, two passengers, who appeared on the scene just- after the gangway had been removed, and as the iron door in the steamer’s side was about to he closed. Cabled information has been received from England that Air A. J. llarrop. M.A., (son of the late Air A. J. Jlarrop, of Hokitika), has been awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Air llarrop went to England aluml the middle of 1923 to carry out historical research at Cambridge on the legal and political relations between England and Xew Zealand and lie entered Cairns College, where he lias since been working with Air E. A. Benians. one of the editors of the Cambridge History of Ihe British Empire, now in the course of production. During his vacations, l)r llarrop has been a member of the literary stall’ of the “Daily Alaii.” as well as a regular contributor of special articles to the Dominion newspapers.

At the Alagistrale’s Court, Greymouth. yesterday. Charles Alien AlcQuarrie. of Kotuku, was charged that on or about January 8, being the occupier of fenced laud, lie did destroy pigs trespassing thereon, and failed to send within 21 hours, in writing, n description of the animals destroyed to the owner. A plea of guilty was entered. Thu Senior-Sergeant stated over l() pigs had been shot. The Magistrate stated there was no doubt that the Act gave power to the owners of fenced land to destroy* trespassing animals, but the owners of the animals had certain rights. If animals were destroyed, notice must be sent to the owners within 2f hours, if the fence were in any way defective, the destruction of animals would not he justified. Defendant would he convicted and fined ss, with costs (Cl) and witness’s expenses (16s 2d).

Yesterday morning the Railway Board and staff, who had arrived at Greymoutli on Saturday, paid a visit to the lines to the State coal mines. 'The party comprised the following: Afossrs G. J. Duckworth (private secretary) and W. R. Davidson (chief engineer). Later in the day they met deputations from the Grey Borough Council, Harbour Board, Farmers’ Union, Chamber of Commerce and others and heard various applications for redress of grievances and requests for attention. The members of the Board listened attentively in the various requests and promised due consideration.

Replying to a deputation at Reefton on Thursday from the Inangaliua County Council urging that the road to the Alexander Reefs, via .Stevenson’s Flat , he completed, the Hon CL .J. Anderson. Minister for Mines, stated that lie had told the Alexander Reefs owners that the Department would only maintain a ’track until the reef was proved to a much lower level than at present. Until this was done no expenditure would he incurred in the construction of a road. A mine should he proved before the taxpayers’ money could be spoilt. He would have to consult his engineers and the officials of the Public Works Department before a filial decision was made. He understood a larger area of land for settlement was available up the Mukawai route, and he would see the Lands Department and find out which route would be most beneficial to the greatest number of settlers in the future. The Minister promised to request the Lauds Department to have the survey made, of the new mining

township at tlie Alexander Reel's as soon as possible, and he would coniliiiinieate with the. Warden, so that any areas applied for could lie held over. He recommended that the County Council get into touch, with the mine owners, and decide on the site for the township.
