BLKNHETM, Afareli 21. A little coterie of officials of the Post and Telegraph Department and the Marino Department have been in Marlborough during (bo last few days completing arrangements for the laying of a now cable between T.vnl! Bay "(Wellington) and Blind River (ivi Marlborough). which is to provide inter-Tsland telephonic communication at all hours of the day and night, in place of the present very restricted service in the “dead” hours of the night. Thus, when the cable is installed and .the necessary shore stations are erected, it will be. a matter of course for the business men of Christchurch. Dunedin and anv other large centre to ring up ‘Wellington. Palmerston. Auckland or any laige centre in the North Island. Tho arrangements will not lie complete for at least three or _ four months, lmt Blenheim Nelson will be able to speak with Wellington at any hours of the day within the next fortnight or so. and the system will he gradually extended until the whole of” Now Zealand is linked up hv telephone. Tf the weather conditions are favourable, tho Tutnnekni will steam into the vicinity of Blind River on Tuesday next, and the shore end of tho cable will he landed, and this section paid out from the shore. Tts end will he buoyed, and tlio Tutanekai will then proceed to Lynll Bay. where she will land the North Island shore end, and return to Blind River, paving out the cable behind her. At Blind River the cable will be joined up with the shore end, which will be located by mean; of a lmoy. After that a. temporary land lino will he connected with 'the cable and Blenheim and Nelson will at once have Die privilege of telephonic commuin(act ion with Wellington, while the installation is being completed for the whole of New Zealand. ST A TEA.IEN T D.BNIED. WELLINGTON, March 22. ft appears that statements to the effect that tho Australian Coimnonwcalh Baud has been disbanded is without foundation a.s the hand is leaving Westralia to-morrow for London, via Africa.
