A local member of the Polite. Forte yesterday paid a. tribute to the smartness of the turnout of the Fire Brigade yesterday morning. lie heard the first alarm and though lie had hi.s clothes all ready to jump into, when ho got outside by the Town Clock be found that the ro.I from the Gibson (Play station was just in front of him. a smartness in turning out that cause, him considerable surprise, as be thought be would have been on the spot an easy first.
The dcatli took place yesterday of M,rs Mary Dec, widow of the late Mr Patrick Dee, a- well-known storekeeper of Hokitika, who passed away some twenty years ago. Deceased had been a well-known resident of many years standing. She was a native ol Garrick M across, Ireland, and 75 years ot age. She leaves a family of seven, two daughters (St. Alary Agues, Convent, Christchurch, and Mary Ann of Hokitika) and five sons (Gerald. There appears m have been some laxity somewhere in (oniieotion with the charge of the water supply. We are in for mod that since .Mr Gaylor has been in charge as turncock (one of his duties being to turn on the. water to full pressure on the occasion of any alarm of fire being given) that the telephone connection with the turncock’s lion*:* has not been made, and that as a result, the giving of the iiro alarm (by special connection with the hell tower, to heads of the Brigade and the turncock) was not effective to the hitter officer, and he had to trust to hearing the firebel!. It was not till Xo. 2 fii(‘hell had bujn rung that Air Gaylor heard the alarm and he ban just turned on the water when the motor car from the seat oi the lire arrived.
The sale of sections at Cook’s River. South Westland, last week, opened up a block of fine country for closer settlement, and forms a distinct advance in the progress of that district. In this connection the survey of these sections enabled the permanent main road on the "ay to Karangnroa to he laid out. The present road is considerably lower down tine road is considerably lower down the flat than that laid out now lor the permanent road, the latter considerably shortening the distance, and lead to two suitable- bridge crossings ol tiie two rivers intervening, which could not possibly he bridged when? the present road crosses, owing to the wide extent of the river bed.-.
There was considerable controversy yesterday in connection with the available water supply for the iise of the .l*’ir? Brigade at the morning’s fire. Supt. Braddon stated yesterday morning that the -absence of a sufficient pressure at the critical moment when the Brigade first got their hose into position altogether upset the value of the smartness of the Brigade in reaching the seen? with their gear. It was most- regrettable (that there should have not been a suitable supply at that time, as it prevented the Brigade in obtaining a. mastery in the first few minutes, and resulted in a considerable destruction by the delay. Hi? stated that he intended to again point out the danger of the position to the Borough Council, this subject having, on a previous occasion caused some friction between the two bodies.
