Tub political situation in New South Wales growing out of the question of the appointments to the Upper Houso is assuming a fresh aspect. Mr Lang in hi.s determination to achieve liis desire in the matter is prepared to attempt a reshuffle of constitutional methods by declaring for a governor of local product. If the attachment to the Motherland is to lie kept intact and as by those cords of sympathetic touch which have held the Empire so closely in the past, it would lie well, we should say, to continue the present practice ot leaving to Great, Britain the elioios of the King’s representatives overseas. The practice has worked well on the whole. With the long line or succession there has been in fife past, there has been ample room for mistakes to be- made. But. despite the changing Goernments at Home very few mistakes of any consequence have been made. It speaks well for life system as it lias worked. The appointment rests with the Government in power at Home for the time being, and whether Conservative, Liberal or Labor the choice lias 'been well made. The McDonald Ministry appointed a House of Commons Labor member as Governor of Tasmania, anil Mr O’Gradv has made good, instancing that the system works uniformly. In the circumstances the demand of Mr Lang, and of those with him, crying out for a local governor is not supported by a reasonable excuse for the change of .system. Mr Lang is travelling a difficult nay, and he will add to the difficulties of the future if by any chance ho gets bis way in the change it has been suggested should be made with the appointments referred to.
