BRITISH COAL REPORT.
[Australian & N.Z. Cable Association.] CAREFUL STUDY NEEDED. LONDON, March 12. The need for careful consideration of the coal report was emphasised by the Premier (Air Baldwin) at a meeting with representatives of the Alining Association and the Aimers’ Federation at Downing Street. Air Baldwin, in a speech, emphasised the seriousness of the responsibility resting on them all in that connection. He requested Cabinet members to study the report with givat care during the week and he asked his hearers, earnestly, to consider the report and not to he in too much of a hurry to jump at conclusions. Even a few day’s careful consideration and deliberation at the present might be worth a great deal to them later on. Sir Evan Williams, on behalf of the mine owners entirely concurred with the Premier’s view. He remarked that the mine owners had on their - side a very large body of people, and many whose whole means in the world might depend on the discussion. Mr Herbert Smith said: "Our people’s lives depend on this industry and more depends upon what is done for them than upon what is done for those whom it affects from, the money viewpoint." Mr Smith, in continuing, said they - would give the report as much consideration as was possible, but the question rested between the Premier and the owners largely with regard to what they were going to say aliout the report and its results. He had no strong opinions yet and would not have until he knew what decision they would make.
