FCOW’S ROUGH PASSAGE. WATER IN ENCINE-ROOM. GISBORNE. March 2. The Harbour Hoard- newly-ptirclias-ed aiixilmrv -cow Xgahou received a terrible liulfett ing on the voyage from Wellington to Gisborne. At times all hopes of her living out the gale were abandoned.
The Xgahou left Wellington at six mi Friday morning. xperieneed moderate head winds till oil ( a.-tlo Point when -lie was struck by a heavy ea.st.erlv gale, which la-tod till vcslcrdav morning.
Mountainous -on- -"'opt the vessel. The forward bulwarks were stove ill and minor damage done. Ihe greatest danger was due to a leak which liegnu yesterday morning, lit a short time the engine-room was Hooded. The pumps were manned and the crew managed to keep the ship afloat. Tf the leak had occurred during the. height of flic gale, the master is of the opinion that nothing could have saved the shin from capsizing. In running belore the gate the Xgahou made a speed of twenty miles per hour between Cape Turnagain and Cape Kidnappers. The scow arrived at Gisborne at 8 o’clock last evening with two and n-ludf I'eet of water ill the engineroom. The leak has not yet been traced. No other serious damage was done and there were no mishaps to any of the crew. The Nga'liou will he used for shipping stone for the harbour works at Gisborne.
