An urgent call for ii.-iiiforeemciit.s lias been sent. A RIO FIRE. MELBOURNE. March I. A. lire destroyed Meyer’s suit goods hulk store in the city, the damage being '£511,000. Part of the premises were occupied by the liritish-Austra-lian Tobacco Company, and in addition to Meyer's loss, tobacco and machinery valued at C25.C03 has been destroyed. The struggle between the coastal steamship owners and the seamen has become mure acute, hut the indications. however, point to the producers being the lighter sufferers than has been the case in previous stoppages. There have been no negotiations or I'oniui 1111 iealions between the owners and the unions regarding the matter in dispute. So tar as the owners are coneei'iied, it is to lie a light to a finish.
