KUMARA JUBILEE.

Tlicre was glorious weather for the jubilee celebrations at Kumara yesterday. ft was a. very happy throng which moved about ;tho racecourse where the sports were in progress? Friends foregathered, often after many years, and old acquaintances ware renewed in a hearty manner.

There was a distinctly social air prevailing, and the hearty handshakes and cordial greetings showed how earnest and pleased till were at the opportunity of meeting again to talk o\cr old times.

The. town of Kumara hurt* a very bright and busy aspect. Gaily decorated as the streets were, the animated scene as the people moved about, and motor cars arrived and

departed, presented a scene reminiscent- of old times. It is a long time since it was lveccssai v to have a policeni;tn on point duty. Hut at ihe intersectiou of Main and Seddon Streets a gentleman in blue was there to regulate the motor vehicle traffic passing round Drummond’s Corner.

The pioneers of the early days gathered, from all parts of the Coasi and from various parts of Now Zealand. The old hands found much to occupy their attimtion in calling lo mind incidents <>[ oilier times, in width they had participated. Tho younger people who had grown up with the district were no less enthusiastic

in recounting their memories of tho early days, and so there was a busy hum of voices, am! smiling faces on all sides, happy folk, in pleasant ossociation enjoying the occasion to the utmost.

The sports were lb? special event of the day. and the gathering was well patronised. The attendance was estimated at 1,500. The sports were well contested, and got through in excellent time. Some fast times were recorded, and the day passed off most pleasantly. The tea-rooms and publican’s booth were well patronised, and many side shows provided entertainment for old and young alike. Hokitika was well represented at the Kumara Jubilee yesterday. and will he also, at the ball to-night. Tomorrow is the luncheon for the special entertainment of the pioneers.
