SWIMMING.

[Australia & N.Z. Cable Association. 1 SYDNEY. February 21. In the swimming event tor the 100 yards ladies’ championship ol Australia the result, was: - .Miss Ena Stockley (N.Z.) 1, Miss Piri Page (N.Z.) 2. Mis- Vera Pawley iN.S.W.) 3. Time 1.9.

A New Zealand sportsman, who lots requested that his name shall not be mentioned, announced before the race Dial In' would present a valuable gold bangle to the winner, irrespective of whether she represented Australia or New Zealand. Miss Ena Sloekley’s victory was a meritorious one. Miss Pawley made a brilliant dash for nearly three-quarters of the journey, but she t-ired after leading for over sixty yards, and when five yards from (lie finish she was obviously beaten. Miss Stockley clung to her doggedly, and when she saw her chance, she raced ahead and finished like a champion, winning by two feet.

Atiss Page’s finish, however, was the most astounding incident in the race. She sprinted along from the Held past Miss Pawley, a few yards from the finishing hoard, and swept ahead, defeating Miss Pawley for second place by more than a yard. Miss Page s time was 1.0 2-5.

The limes were slow, the swimmers being lnvndicnpcd by a full tide and by a north-east breeze, which blew straight at. the starting board. The 220 yards double relay scratch race resulted: Miss Clare Cauldwell and J. Barratt first; Misses Piri Page and A. Barry second; Misses Ena Stockley and AY. Crook third. Time 2.30 2-5.

The general concensus of opinion is that, (bo New Zealand girl champions will go a long wav.
