At a Y.ALC’.A luncheon at Gisborne, the Governor-General said that as a soldier lie had met the association in many places, both in war and in peace. lie knew that without the association and its homelike atmosphere their sons and their friends would have suffered more than they did. Me was hound to say that in some parts of Scotland the movement was not. so well developed as in parts of New /calami. From what he had seen in Auckland ho had learned a great deal of the ramifications of the Y.M.C.A.. and especially the value o! hoys’ work. Hardly any of them realised the present necessity for such work, but there was a greater need now tfian in the past. In the war they had lost some of the best of their voting men. with the result that there was now a gap between the young men coining on and the middle aged men. who would have been exerting a steady influence on the hoys who were growing up. The deficiency could he made no only by associations such as the Y.M.C.A., which were taking the nines of those who had been killed at the front.
