CANTERBURY PROGRESS LEAGUE.
WESTLANU COMMITTEE. SOUTH WESTLAND BRIDGES. The following letter from the League Committee to all local bodies has been circulated regarding the proposal for expediting the erection of bridges in South Westland : .With a view to expediting the work of bridging the streams on tho Main South Road which under the present programme of works will probably not be done under five years, a public
meeting of Local Bodies and all interested in the progress of the district is convened for Tuesday, 2nd March, at 7.30 p.m. in the County Chambers, to discuss ways and means of inducing earlier and faster progress of these necessary works. One proposal is that the County Council be asked to find £ISOO, and the Borough Council £SOO. at an annual cost of £l4B and £46 6s 8(1 respectively, over a period of 15 years. A further sum of £SOO if raised locally by conribution would give a quarter of the estimated cost of the required bridges, and it is felt that with this sum in hand a request could be made* with every prospect of success to have the work completed within two years. Any other proposal will be welcomed, and you are requested to be present or send a delegate to discuss this very important question of travelling facilities. Much has been done to advertise
the district, but unless the bridges are built much of the good work done will have gone for nought if tourist traffic is discouraged by reports of hold-ups
on account of floods and wash outs. Please give this matter the earnest consideration it deserves and come pre-
pared to assist to expedite the removal of the last sources of trouble along the finest tourist drive in the world, and
also assist the district by making the road safe and easv Tor stock driving. .T. W. MORRIS. Secretary. Hokitika, 13th Feb.. 1926.
All interested in the bridging of the rivers are invited to attend and take part in the above public meeting.
The di He re 11 co ’twixt the pipe and the cigarette is as well marked as that between a sandwich and a grided steak. Hence, while the cigarette lias numberless votaries, the pipe, because it is so satisfying has many more. Seasoned smokers say there is nothing to equal a pipe for solid comfort and enjoyment. But the tobacco must be good, and not loaded with nicotine as the imported brands usually are. Our own New Zealand grown tobaccos are tho purest and being comparatively free from nicotine tliey are greatly appreciated bv smokers who find they can smoke them tor hours at a time without burning their tongues or experiencing other unpleasant consequences. It is interesting to note that those tobaccos are all toasted in the process of manufacture, and to the toasting must lie attributed the wonderful flavour and delightful aroma that characterises them. The principal brands are “Riverhead Gold,” mild, "Navy Cut” (Bulldog), medium, and “Cut Plug No 10 (Bullshead) full-strength. AH toasted and every tobacconist stocks them.— Advt.
