FRENCH OFFICERS ENTERTAINED PALMERSTON N., Feb. 12.
Three officers from the French sloop C’assiopee arrived in Palmerston North from Wellington to-day and were the guests of tho local bodies. They were entertained at luncheon, the Mayor, Air Nash, presiding. Afterwards they were taken on a tour of the town and environs, returning to Wellington this afternoon.
AWAIIURI SENSATION. ■ PALAIEHSTON X., Feb. 12. .Mrs Drummond, one of th.e victims of the Awahuri sensation, sustained severe facial wounds and was also burned about the face. Airs Sutherland was severely wounded by a knife thrust in tbe shoulder, or. possibly, an axe blow. Both ladies passed a fairly good night. AH* Sutherland is still in a serious condition, but Airs Drummond is not ill danger.

The whole trend of the discussion was to the effect that Ho parochialism would l,e introduced. All parties should endeavour to pull together and assist the Government and tbe Universities to arrive at a satisfactory decision regarding the site. It was resolved to hold a conference on Monday the 22nd inst and invite the local district bodies to send representatives ; also tlie local district members of Parliament I*3 invited to attend. An unusual ease of attempting to obtain a certificate under the Inspection of Machinery Ael. by fraud, by representing' lie was in the employ of the Alatamata Cheese Factory from Alay 3th to November 2<ltli, 1923, whereas up to August of that period he was employed in the Wanganui Railways Workshops, was brought againi a young mail, 'I ho mas Price, at Hamilton to-day. Air 15. Barnes, manager of the factory at, Alr-iamata, was charged with giving I’ric - a false testimonial cl service.

The .Magistrate, Air W. Wilson, said the defendants had put their heads together to get Brice a certificate falsely. It was a serious matter for an unqualified person to get a certificate by fraud. Each defendant was lined £3 and costs.
JOY RIDING SENTENCES. AUCKLAND, Feb. 12
At the Police Court. Edward Henry Leatliam Quintal, aged 20, Rudolph. Paul 1 vitanovich. aged 19. Joseph Hcares, aged 20, who participated ill a joy ride on Saturday night, involving the borrowing of three cars, were before the Police Court to-dav, the former l-eing charged with illegally converting to his own use three cars and the others one ear. Air Pavilion, S.M.. sentenced Quintal. who had taken the lull blame, to three month* gaol on one charge and admitted him to probation for three years on another. The other accused were discharged. PAPER JU’NNER KNIFED. CHRISTCHURCH, February 12. Herbert James Symons, was lon ml guilty of having assaulted 'iliomas George Atkinson, but not with intent to do grievous bodily harm. Atkinson, a newspaper runner, alleged that Symons stopped the complainant’s horse, undid the reins from the bridle, and attacked Atkinson with a pocket Unite. .Medical evidence stated Atkinson’s injuries were superficial, ivith the exception of a wound on the finger, which would leave a permanent disability. For the defence it was claimed that Atkinson attacked Symons with a whip. MOTORISTS FINED. CHRISTCHURCH, February 12. Seven motorists were lined £lO and costs l.v the Magistrate for speeding. One driver also had his license endorsed. INDICATIONS OF SUICIDE. ROXBURGH. February 11. The police are advised that Henry E. .Tames, aged 22 years, a clerk in the Public Works Department at -Miller’s Flat, was found dead at midnight, with a bullet wound in his forehead and a revolver lying beside him. The indications point to suicide.
HOTEL THEFTS. "WELLINGTON, February 12. As a result of hotel thieves paying visit to an hotel on Thursday evening, several members of the British howling party will have just cause to remember their visit to Wellington. One member of the party had £57 stolen, while another was a loser to the extent of £27. The police have the matter under investigation. BODY IDENTIFIED. AUCKLAND, Feh. 12. A body found floating in the harbour has been identified as that of Michael Aliddleton, an employee of the Auckland Harbour Board, who disappeared from a dinghy on January (list. A fellow emp'oyee said that deceased tohl him that if cancer of the tongue, for which he had been operated upon, came on again, lie would taka the dinghy and a bottle of whisky and go overboard. About a week before his disappearance he complained that his tongue was getting sore again.
