In the old nursery rhyme about the “Young Lady from Banbury Cross” we are told that sh? had “rings on her fingers and bells on her toes, and she shall make music wherever she goes.” That truth caii at times be stranger than Action is proved by a ns port from London that small gold bells sewn on garters constitute the latest tango novelty. This curious custom has not yet made its way to Australia or New Zealand, hut should the Argentine tango craze ever reach u.s there is no knowing to what length its devotees will go. In London ballrooms there is a variety of noises, and it. is stated that loud metallic tinkles almost drown the strain of the jazz bands. The secret of these tinkles lies in the heels of the new dance shoes worn by women. These are provided with revolving metal discs which make the music for the tango “stamp.” Unfortunately all women do not keep perfect time, and heeds are knocked and feet stamped at different moments, upsetting the rhythm of the dance. AVhen, in addition, the swaying of the hips—ordained by the tango—sets in motion the new eoat-of-mnil tunics, swings heavy head fringes, or jangles the dozen bracelets which many women affect, the noise becomes almost deafening. All this seems to give the lie direct to the commonly-accepted saying that the English take their pleasures sadly.
