FIRES IN GREYMOUTH
unoccupied dwelling burned
GREYAIOUTH. Feh. 8
A destructive lire early on Sunday morning partly destroyed an old unoccupied seven roomed, two-storeyed house situated in Arncy Street, next to the Gilmer Hotel, owned by Mr Nuttall. of Grevmouth, who is at present in the North Island. The alarm was given about 2.30 a.in., and the Brigade were on the scene before the lire had got an extensive hold on the building. However, the flames had obtained a good hold, while the work of the fire fighters was hampered considerably by the shingle roof, over which was placed corrugated iron. This had to be removed before the work of the brigade could 1.0 carried out. and the excessive heat experienced was overpowering. The men. assisted by a good pressure of water, succeeded in saving the real portion of the house, mending the kitchen and outhouses. The fire appears to have been started under mysterious circumstances, the place having been untenanted for the past fortnight, the last occupier being a Airs Alunay. The fire undoubtedly started in a corner of one of the front rooms, which abutt the street. The Fire Brigade were summoned at midnight on Saturday to a call from a building in Johnston Street owned by Air T F Coates, and occupied tiy inmese tenants. The Brigmfe. however, arrived on the scene before am’ extensive damage had been done, and t"c fire was quickly extinguished by means of a chemical appliance.
