HEAVY DALE AT HASTINGS
HASTINGS, Feb. 8
A heavy gale from the south-west yesterday damaged the orchards, especially the pear harvest, which is on the trees. The apple crops are affected, but not very badly.
Y\CUTS.MEN IN TROUBLE. AUCKLAND. Feb. 8
Two young yachtsmen. Desmond Shearman and AValler Roliertson, in a 14-foot boat, tho Aotca, capsized in a squall off Islington Bay at 8 o’clock on Saturday evening. They drifted on the upturned craft for thirteen hours and were rescued at 9 o’clock on Sunday morning by a fisherman. Both wore greatly distressed and said they could not hold on much longer. They were transferred to a yacht and conveyed to the city. Both men are recovering. The Aotea was left to her fate with all her gear. Two other young men, Day and Shelton, were blown to sea in an open boat from Afurray’s Bay. A launch and two other boats went in pursuit and the launch towed all three boats hack to the Bay. VISCOUNT A LLF.NBY. CHRISTCHURCH, Feh. 8. A crowded gathering at the Alunieipal Chambers gave Lord and Lady Allen by a hearty civic reception this morning. Later Lord Alienin’ visited the disabled soldiers’ home. NARROW ESCAPE. CHRISTCHURCH, Feh. 8. AVhen a six-roomed house at Cashme:e was detroyed by fire early th:morning. the owner Mr H. F. Lang, had a narrow escape, he being awakened bv the fumes.
ACCIDENTS TO. JOCKEYS. WELLINGTON. Feh. 8. The telegram sent bv Afr Jordan. AF.P.. to the Afinister of Internal Affairs. regarding accidents to jockeys, has been forwarded l»v the AHnister to the Racing Conference. The Afinister expects to receive, in due course, from the conference, a Tull report on the incidents referred to by Afr Jordan, when the whole matter will receive careful consideration.
WAR -MEMORIAL UNVEILED. PALMERSTON N., Feb. 8. The Palmerston North and District War Memorial, was unveiled yesterday in boisterous weather. Speeches were delivered by the Mayor (Air Nathan), Air Nash, ALT’., and the Prime Minister (Air .1. G. Coates) who performed the ceremony. The latter spoke of the duty the country owed to the returned men and also stressed the need of world peace, but at tlie same time mentioned the need to be ready for eventualities before peace would lxassured. To lie prepared was one way to assure peace. A largo concourse was present at the ceremony. Wreaths were placed on the memorial on which four hundred and twenty-five names are perpetuated. FATAL MOTOR- ACCIDENT. DANNEVIRKE, Feb. 8. A fatal motor car accident occurred in High Street on Saturday evening when a car containing three men, George Henry Lowry. labourer, Danjievirke, married and about 41 years of age. who was sitting in the back seat. Archibald Ernest Johnson, taxi porprietor. owner of tb.e car, and Geo. Paris, who was driving. About G. 40 p.m. the three men went for a drive to Piripiri. returning to Daiinevirke at 8 p.m. The accident occurred at a bend on tlie main road near the domain, where tlie ear ran oil to the footpath and in swerving off the back portion struck a supporting brace of the electric light polo. Lowry sustained serious injuries, including a fracture of the skull and died in the hospital later in the evening without regaining consciousness. The others escaped unhurt. The hack part of tho car was wrecked. DANNEVIRKE. Feb. 8.
Correction:—The name of the man killed is La wry, not Lowry. Ho is a brother of the well known Hastiiig’s horse trainer, Joe Lawrv.
PRODIGAL SON A FRAUD. AUCKLAND. February 8. At the Police Court, Vincent Stanley Burchall. aged 20. referred to by tlie .Magistrate last Alondav as the returned prodigal son. to-day was sentenced by Mr Poyiiton, S.AL, to fourteen days’ imprisonment. Inquiries made in Wanganui discovered nobody who knew the accused. The Magistrate said : " You have told lies and we cannot believe what you say. T am afraid your are a fraud.”
