CANCER.
THOSE AVHO CONTRACT IT. [“Sydney Sun” Cables.] LONDON, February 5. The Medical Research Council investigated 4(1,118 eases of cancer in males. The Council discovered that chimney sweepers were subject to cancer of the skin ; cotton mill spinners, also tanners and fitters were liable to cancer owing to their skins being perpetually smeared with lubricating oil. Chemists and textile dyers suffered owing to irritation by pitch or tar, but it was not discovered which was harmful. Fishermen were the chief open air sufferers. They contracted cancer of the iaee and ear owing to oilskins and _sou’westers becoming contaminated with tar. Gardeners were liable to cancer owing to manures. Excessive smoking and drinking caused cancer. Brewers, messengers, porters, dockers, hute’ ers, hawkers, tobacconists and open ailworkers drinking exceptionally hot tea boiled in billies wore predisposed to cancer of the throat.
