The trial of .Martha Jane O’Shnugli-, nesy on two charges of unlawfully using an instrument with intent to procure a miscarriage, took place at the Supreme Court to-day, before Air Justice Stringer. The jury returned a verdict of ■‘guilty,” with a strong recommendation to mercy, on account of her age. The judge passed a sentence of ten years’ imprisonment. lie said the prisoner was a menace to society, and he would not lie doing his duly to the public if he did not pass a very severe sentence.
In the Supreme Court, the jury failed to agree in the ease of Lunar Faker Kara, a Hindu hawker, charged with forging specifications for ihe building of a motor body, and attempting t> cause Mr Justice Alpers to act upon the documents as if it were genuine. A new trial was ordered. William George Franklin, who was charged with the theft of a ca.se of goods valued at £5 2s, was acquitted. Accused is a carrier, and the case of goods, that arrived in August, 1019. was found under bis house, it having been opened. Accused said be did not see the ease until it was found by detectives.
Two ships’ firemen. John Miggent and Thomas Frederick Buckingham, were found guilty ot assault and robbery, and were remanded for sentence. Joseph Roy O’Shea, for assault anil robbery, was sentenced to twelve, mon tlis’ i m prison men t.
