Either late on Monday night or early yesterday morning, burglars broke inti, the grocery premises of Messrs Kettle Bos., Ltd., on Mawhcra Quay, Greymouth. and made away with a small amount of money. An entrance was attempted through the hack lane and through the double swing door at the rear of the premises, where the marks ol a crowbar or similar lever are evident. Failing to make an entry here, the thief then turned his attention to a near-by window which looks into the rear office and cashier’s department. Mere, the intruder was suo(Vjssful in gaining admittance. by means of the lever, and made bis way into the shop, where lie raided the cash register. Fortunately at the time, only £4 had been left within the till, hut the intruder secured this amount, though he was perhaps chagrined at the smallness of the haul. A shocking fatality occurred yesterday afternoon about 2.30 o'clock, in the bush of Armstrong’s sawmill about seven miles from Nelson Creek. Grey Valley, Mr Joseph Haiirahan. third youngest son of Mrs Haiirahan, of Tailiui Street, Greymouth. about 3fi years of age, losing his life through being struck by a. falling birch tree. The accident was so unexpected that, the deceased had no chance to avoid it. and death was instantaneous. There will be an inquest in Greymouth to-day into the fatality. The late Joseph liannihaii was a worker well respected by bis mates, who speak in the highest terms of him. He saw lengthy .service at the front during the war. and, while unassuming in li.is manner, was a man above the average in intelligence. Besides his mother (Mrs \Y. Haiirahan, of Tainni Street), the deceased leaves three sisters (Mrs Geo. Mallinson, and Misses Nora and Margaret llanrahan of Christchurch), and five brothers. Messrs William (CliristcluiCdh), and Edward, Richard. George and Daniel Hanrahan, all wcl-known Greymouth residents. He was an unmarried man and was a native of Goldsborough.

While bathing in the Polmngiiia river, two Ashurst hoys had an exciting experience. A large eel was seen among the reeks at the bottom of the hole, and one of the bathers, armed with a gall', dived in and succeeded ii. jagging the mi nster, which immediately set up a great light to get free. A terrific struggle ensued. and the eel. after actually towing one of the bathers down stream, wreciici! itself oil the gall’. Instead of escaping, however, it made a savage attack upon the amateur big game fisherman, who despite having the wind up considerably. finally got, it. ashore. On Wednesday morning of last nock, a serious accident happened at Glenii.opc by which an elderly man, named Thomas Finiiri., ncarl, lust his life. Francis was working at the loot ol the lace, when a considerable quantity ol metal came down, completely covering him. He was struck on the chest and knocked hack on the hard rock bottom, and then buried by the debris. Help was immediately forthcoming and the unfortunate man was dug out and removed from the quarry. Doctor Fogg was taken out by car and did all that was possible to alleviate tli pain. Later the injured man was taken to Nelson hospital. Latest word was that be had received severe internal injuries including a broken pelvis bone. “Otago Tom,” as he was commonly called by bis mates, was a very popular man and greatly respected.
