CRICKET.
ENGLISH TEST CAPTAIN
[by TKr.ROUAPH PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] LONDON, Jan. 18. 1 Ik* Australian Press Association miderstands that the general assumption in English cricketing circles is that (arr as the l captain for England is not favoured m the highest cjuartc-rs, where the chances of Fender are preferred. This is the more interesting because it is believed that Pender hitherto has not been a persona grata with the selectors. There is a widespread impression that the reason that the Alarylebone Club has not so far invited him to captain England was its recollection of his newspaper cables from Australia, which, it was thought, might make his captaincy unpopular in Australia. As a. matter of fact recent cables from Australia have shown that instructed opinion in Australia considers Fender should captain the side. Fender has captained Surrey with great skill and generalship. 1 auikiier, the South African, regards Fender as the best tactician in Engand. Aforeover, be is an excellent change bowler. Indeed, Bardsley described him as the best change howler in England. Filially, lie is a daring captain and takes risks, whereas Carr is orthodox, and would captain his side on ordinary lines.
