ALLEGED THEFT.
OF VALUBALE MINIATURES.
BARONESS COMMITTED,
[Australia & N.Z. Cable Association.] LONDON, January 18. A curious story of alleged theft of a miniature valued at five hundred sterling, belonging to Sir Archibald Hamilton, was told at the trial of Baron and Baroness Osten Sacken, both Russian. It was alleged that they had been the guests at tea, of Hamilton, who showed them his art collection.
After I hey left, the miniature was missed and the couple were arrested on alighting from the boat train at Southampton. when the minature was found ill the possession of the Baroness, who is described as a charming woman. She alleged that when looking over the collection she admired the miniature, whereupon Hamilton said, “ You really like it, Baroness,” and thrust it into her hand, adding “ Then it’s yours.” Hamilton denied this story adding lie might, have been a Don Juan in his voutil, but he was older and wiser now.
The Baron was acquitted and the Baroness committed for trial.
