PROHIBITION ENFORCEMENT.

SIX YEARS REVIEWED. WOMEN WANT TO CO-OPERATE. [Australia & N.Z. Cable Association.) WASHINGTON, January 16. 0 11 the occasion of the sixth anniversary of prohibition, several important statements were issued relative to the nearest measures of .success. Senator Wheeler, counsel for Hie Anti-Saloon League, said: “The consumption of intoxicants has dropped to a small fraction of its former total. The records show that proir to prohibition wo consumed 17-1.000,000 gallons of pure alcohol in beer, distilled spirits

and wines. This was more than twice the total production of denatured alcohol io-duy. While computing all tin alcohols now used for beverage purposes fh.(‘ total indicates only a ten per cent consumption as compared with before prohibition. Pauperism and slums have gone and our political life is cleaner. A minority opposes the enforcement of the prohibition law. hut the enforcement- law is the sole remedy against such lawlessness in the United States.” Attorney Buckner, who is entrusted with the enforcement of prohibition in the most difficult area, namely, New York, declared that well-intentioned people strongly favouring prohibition do not insist upon the Government paying the price of real enforcement and intimated that with the present means he finds the law only ten pei cent enforceable.

The most prominent women of the nation have signed a memorial which has been forwarded to President Coolidge, members of the Cabinet, Congressmen and Senators, announcing their earnest wish to co-operate to bring about adequate enforcement of prohibition and asking that enforcement be removed from politics and placed on the merit system, pointing out that prohibition, like all great reforms, will take one or two generations before success is attained. The women also opposed light wines and beers. The correspondent asked President Coolidge to comment on the prohibition anniversary, hut lie declined.
