Fifty astronomers from many countries observed the solar eclipse and achieved mixed results, according to the site. Though the sky was not perfect, the leader of tho British expedition af Beiicoolen on the west coast of Sumatra, carried out the full programme and saw a corona, similar io that observed in India in 1899. On the contrary clouds prevented completely satisfactory results being obtained at Palembang on the opposite side of the island.
