A wireless has been recioved at the isle of Wight from the steamer Horornta, hound from Auckland to London, that she has broken her steering gear and is drifting two knots hourly and asking ships in the vicinity to stand by. Ii is stated the Loiidon-.Midland and Scottish railway has ordered twentyfour million feet ol British f olumbiau Douglas fir for sleepers. This marks the opening of n new policy ol the British railways confining their purchases to British manufacturers and Empire materials where possible. The railways spend collectively lour millions annually, covering approximately fiftv thousand different materials. Ihe new policy is expected greatly to increase Empire trade.
GERMAN CNEMPLOYED. BERLIN. January 13. There are 1.568.000 unemployed in Germany, an increase of 425.000 during the year. NORTH POLAR FLIGHT. OTTAWA, January 13. Captain Wilkins’ advance party for the Polar flight has arrived at Victoria and is sailing to-night for Fairbanks, whence it will sledge, with dog teams, supplies over four hundred miles along the winter trail to Point Harrow. Two Fokker aeroplanes are being sent to Fairbanks where they will be assembled and fly to Point Barrow. Wilkins expects to hop off across the Polar sea* on the 21st March, taking only one plane. Each machine is capable of a speed of fifty miles an hour, carrying three thousand pounds weight.
