EPIDEMIC IN CENTRAL EUROPE. ENGLISH NOTES FORGED. [by TELEOIUrn —rElt PRESS ASSOCIATION.! RERUN, January 12. An epidemic of bank note forgery has smitten Central Europe. Den after den of forgers are being discovered in Germany, including one band of four Eerliners, who have devoted themselves for a year to the manufacturing of Bank of England live pound notes. The printing press and many of the talso notes have been seined. The plant includes lithographic plates. Gerstenberger, one of those arrested, is a first-rate draughtsman. Originally they copied • Bank of England notes by hand, but, as this was proved too slow, to be lucrative, a lithographer was added to the gang. The authorities in London, however, state that there has been no increase in the Bank of England forgeries which are somewhat below the ordinary average apparently. Few of these German notes have passed the vigilant care of the English authorities. ITALY AFFECTED. BUDAPEST, January 11. The epidemic of counterfeiting has now affected Italy. Doctor Svetz, a leading Magyar, has been arrested on a charge of placing large sums of counterfeit lire. It is alleged that two politicians. Von Eckbardt and Ulain, are involved, and a request has been made that their Parliamentary immunity be cancelled, so as to permit of their prosecution. Von Eckhnrdt attacks the Government for yielding to the agitation in this matter, which has been engineered he says, by the foreign press.
REFUSED TO SUICIDE. LONDON. January 12.
The “ Daily Telegraph’s” diplomatic correspondent says:—"Perhaps the most interesting personality in the Hungarian note forgeries scandal is the Chief of the Police, Nadossy.
