WIRTHS’ CIRCUS.

Wirth Pros Circus arrived in town yesterday afternoon about two o’clock from Christchurch and from thence to dark was the subject of the wholehearted attention of the younger generation, especially in the work of detraining and erecting their huge tent on Cass Square. The animals, especially the herd of a dozen elephants were the subject of special interest. At 5 p.m. the animals were on exhibition, a large number availing themselves of tin? opportunity, while at night the lingo tent held a record crowd. Wirtli Bros, have a proud record and reputation for quality and the programme submitted on the present occasion was worthy of that high name. The opening parade took place promptly at 8 o’clock and was followed by Captain Smith and his five performing lions. Comedy was supplied by Grimaldi and then a novelty act on" a trolley by a pony. Two baby elephants were then introduced by Miss Eileen May and the Carmello trio in juggling extraordinary gave a very clever turn. A horse net was followed by five elephants in a clever fight for the colours, concluding with the carrying off of the body of the captain, a very cleverly carried out number that won special applause. An acrobatic turn on horseback was followed by the star performance Professor Bett’s seals and monkeys. The seals gave a wondefully clever act in which they did some marvellous balancing and generally showed wonderful tuition. Further comedy was followed by the Honey Family, a clever team of acrobats in some specially good turns. Trick ponies and Arab horses were followed bv the dental whirl act, a clever and enjoyable one. A miniature circus, the bull fight, a trick jockey act and some cever trapeze work and slack wire walking brought a verv fine performance to a close at 10.30. The Circus immediately began to get ready for their flight northwards and at 2 a.in. their large special train left for Reefton where they appear tonight.
