WHEAT PROBLEM.

A CONFERENCE. ASHBURTON, Jan. 10. Official notification of the conference to he held in Christchurch on January 20th. in' connection with the wheat problem, has been received by the president of the Mid-Canterbury executive of the Farmers’ Union (Mr John Brown, of Eawcliffe). To-day ho received the following communication from the Department of Industries and Commerce :

“In order that representatives of wheat-growers may have an opportunity to discuss with the Department and with representatives of millers and merchants'details in relation to llic adaption of a scheme of Government control of the marketing: of the approaching wheat; harvest, it has been arranged to rail a conference in Christchurch on January 20th. at which the draft regulations will be submitted for discussion.

“I have accordingly to ask that you will be good enough to take such action as may lie necessary to arrange if possible for the presence at that conference of, say, four representatives of growers. I hope that no difficulty will arise in this connection, and that you will he able to make arrange-

ments as suggested. “The fconfcfenco will meet at 10 a.m. in the conference hall of the Chamber of Commerce, Worcester St., Christchurch, on the date mentioned, January 20th.”

Mr Brown explains that the Department of Industries and Commerce must proceed oil the assumption that there will lie no change in the policy already adopted. If, however, a meeting of growers is held in the meantime, and a resolution is carried asking the Government to reverse its decision to control this season’s harvest, and if the Cabinet accedes to such request it is hoped that the conference on January 20th. can he cancelled to avoid inconvenience to those appointed as representatives of tbe growers’ and other interests.
