AN IMPORTANT CONFERENCE

Fergus) was chairman, and among tlie papers read was one from Sir James Allen, now High Commissioner for New Zealand in London.

Singularly enough, the representatives eoncernecl "ill tome together during an Exhibition period, hut on this occasion the conlcronee will he lugger in every way than its distant predecessor. This morning the Under-SecretarY of .Mines (Mr A. 11. Kimbell) received a comnuinication from .Mr F. 11. Clapj), an eminent oil geologist in New York, who was in New Zealand recently, enclosing papers relating to the essentials for .successful oil development. This will he read by Mr Kimbell at the conference on Mr Capp’s behalf. Practically every phase of the mining industry will he the subject of papers by competent authorities. The conference is creating widespread interest among officials throughout the Dominion, and it is regarded in Ihe light of filling a long-felt want, since it provides the means of bringng interested people together and enables an exchange of ideas which must he of mutual benefit.

A large number of colliery companies are co-operating iti the matter by making arrangements to allow some of their officials to he present. The conference has as its patron the Minister of Mines (the Hon. G. J. Anderson).
