CANTERBURY V. AUCKLAND AUCKLAND, January 8.
The Csiiiterbury-Auckland Plunket Shield match began to-day in fine weather and on a good wicket. Smith won the toss and decided to hat first. Horspool and Mills opened and both batted carefully, taking few risks. Mills first two scoring strokes were boundaries, but the majority of the runs came from singles at the rate of a run per minute. With forty-four on the hoard Horspool was clean howled b_v Read. Sneddon followed. 1 lor -14.

The “ Daily Telegraph.” commenting on Lite New Zealand cricketers’ tour, said the team, since the tour first opened at Brisbane, lias shown wondeii 111 improvement. It possesses some enterprising batsman n.nd Cunningham is a bowler of outstanding ability. Blunt and Dacre were two brilliant batmen and Lowry also was a great success. Allcott performed well. The fielding of the side was good all round. One thing the tour lias shown is that the standard of cricket in the Dominion is improving. Australia should do everything possible to assist the New Zealanders in putting the game on a sound basis. Financially the tour was not a success.
