BY TELEGRAPH— PRE3S ASBN-, GOPTRIGHT. MAN RUNS AMOK. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 7. A sensation was caused at New Brighton shortly after 1 o’clock this afternoon by the extraordinary l>elniviour of a young man. Clad only in a pair of “shorts,” he clambered on to the tiled roof of the Bier building. He ran all over the roof. Then lie sat down, and started to throw the tiles oil to the roadway below. He also pulled down the electric wires. A posse of police was hurried to New Brighton in a police van. The young man knew a couple of the policemen, and he .submitted quietly to being escorted hack to Christchurch.
It is estimated that the young mail did £7O or £BO -worth of damage at New Brighton. He was removed to the Mental Hospital. This young man i-. well-known in sporting circles in Christchurch. He has had a nervous breakdown. It is h-elieveil to have been caused by Lon much deep study, after working hours combined with his strenuous endeavours on the fields of sports over a considerable period. A ROWDY GAME. CHRISTCHURCH. Jan. 7. In a case in which a man was charged with assaulting women at New Brighton, a witness stated that various games were played on the beach. Witness and her sister participated in a game of “housey housev.” A man other than the defendant pushed his way in between witness and her sister, and paid their entrance fee to the game. Another witness said that the game was tho “rowdiest he h.ad see?; on tho beach.”
In lining the defendant £2 and costs, the Magistrate said that probably the defendant was suffering from the effects of liquor and the excitement of the game.
MBS O’SHAGGHNESSY’S TRIAD. AUCKLAND. Jan. 7. I'm nr charges of unlawfully using an instrument were preferred against Mrs Martha Jane O’Shaughiicssy, aged 59, (for whom Mr Singer appeared) at. the police court to-day. I lit 1 accused was before the court last week oil three of the charges, and was remanded. The fourth charge related to mi alleged offence on December 20. A remand was made until next Monday. . . To a request for hail. Chief Detective Cummings objected, lie said that the accused had been committed tor trial on two charges, and while out oil bail, Oil three more charges. It was alleged that she had eommitteiinothcr offence. Bail was refused. HICKS’ BAY -MEAT WORKS. GISBORNE. Jan. 8. The Hicks’ Bay Freezing Works will open again this season. Last year the directors of tlie Gisborne Sheep-farmers’ Company called upon the farmers in the district to guaiantoe a certain amount ot .stock as the minimum killing, in order to allow the works to pay expenses. A similar poliev has been adopted this season and the guarantees have lieen given.
SWORDFISH ARJ’KAR. TAURAXGA. Jan. 8. Swordfish have made an early appearance this year off Mayor Island, the first being caught on AW<lih*sil;» by Tvnn Knight, of Dnnnevirko. It measured eleven leet six inches. I lie same party also caught seven sharks, including one thirteen feet.
WOOL Sa i.i'.b. 'CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 8.
The wool sale was resumed this morning and the demand was again keen, with free competition. Prices for suncr-wools were from a half-penny to one penny in advance of last sale. Tlie other classes sold well without any quotable changes in value. There was virtually a total clearance.
