[by TELEGRAPH —PEE PKESS ASSOCIATION.] CENTENARI VN’S DEATH. WELLINGTON, Dec. 28. John McCnble died in Wollingtno Public Hospital this morning, aged 100 years 9 months. He was a native of Ireland and fought in the Crimean War. Indian Mutiny and Maori War. Afterwards lie settled in the llangitekei district and about six years ago he came to Wellington. The late Mr MeC’ablc retained all his faculties till quite recently. POSSIBLE TRAM STRIKE. CHRISTCHURCH. December 28. The Christchurch Tramwnymon have taken a ballot during the last few flays on a proposal to strike. It is said that tho motormen and conductors are strongly rn favour of a strike, owing to their dissatisfaction with their treatment by the management. The ballot, taken, however, embraces all the members of the Union, and all tho employees are not so dissatisfied as the traffic men. The result of the ballot lias not yet been declared. If the declaration is in favour of a strike, the proposal is that work shall cease on New Year's Dav.
NURSE SERIOUSLY INJURED. \ ASHBURTON. Doe. 29. Nurse Doris Lucas, of the County Hospital staff, met with a serious accident. She was using a swing in the Domain when il broke, the fall fracturing her spine. AN INQUEST. CHRISTCHURCH. Dee. 29. At nn inquest, this morning, on Rita I/ouise Roach. 28. a verdict was returned that she died as a result of an illegal operation, hut no evidence was available to show by whom it was performed. MOTORISTS’ LUCKY ESCAPE. NELSON. Dec. 29. A party of Thames motorists, consisting of Mr and ’.Mrs W. Judd. Allan Judd (son), Miss .Tudd (daughter), and Leslie Judd (cousin) had a sensational experience on the Murchison road yesterday. 'While negotiating a bend they met a motor lorry and while passing the edge of the road gave way, preciuatat ing the car and its occupants thirty feel below, the car coming to rest against a tree stump. The oceanaut's shot out of tho top of the hood, but all escaped injury with the exception of the two ladies, Mrs Judd receiving severe facial injuries, including a broken nose and her daughter, a cut leg. Both are in the public hospital, but their condition is not serious.
