GAME OE CHANCE. DUNEDIN, December 21
In the Police Court, David Livingstone was charged that, by means of a certain device, he disposed of personal property by the drawing of envelopes at a stand at the Exhibition, this being a mode of chance. He was fined Co. His assistants disposed of packets of a reddish material which defendant called ‘‘Eastern florient,” alleged to He a disinfectant. Each packet cost Is, and had a coupon attached, and the purchaser handed this to the assistant and received an article plus the packet. The Magistrate held that no judgment or discrimination on the part of the customer could possibly he exercised in order to obtain any particular article. The fine was increased in order to give defendant an opportunity of appealing. LADIES' PIPE BA ( ND. AUCKLAND, Dee. 22. Six under-age members of Hie Australian Ladies’ Pipe Band were prevented from proceeding to Canada by Hie liner Anratigi to-day. the authorities insisting on the production of the written consent of ilioir parents allowing them to travel. These must he obtained from Australia. This means that the whole Band will slop here for over a month. It is estimated that the delay will cost them £6OO. RUN OVER BY CAR. A LITTLE GIRL KILLED. NEW PLYMOUTH. December 21. A girl aged six was killed, and another girl aged three lies in the hospital in a critical condition as a result ol being knocked over bv a motor-ear in New Plymouth this afternoon. The children are: Gladys .May O’Don. aged 6 years, and 9 months, daughter of .Mr K. O'Don. rail wav employee, ol Mine Street, killed.' Doreen Walsh, aged 55 years. and !i months, daughter of Edward Walsh, labourer, I line street, serious injuries lo bead, condition critical. The accident occurred in SI. Aubyn street, close to Motley street intersection, shortly after 1.30 p.m. Thomas Henry f.ovcgrove. stevedore, of Wanganui. was driving a motor-ear towards the breakwater, and is stated to have been travelling on bis correct side of the road and at a low speed, a trainear being near. The children, apparently were on the footpath and then
suddenly ran in front of the ear. Lnvcgrovo immediately pulled Ids ear up, but the distance was too short to enable him to avoid the children. The child O'Den. when picked up was lifeless. ami death is considered to have been instantaneous. Medical assitanee was immediately obtained, and Doreen Walsh was sent to the hospital, where just before mid-night she was reported to be in a critical state.
