ROCKEFELLER. MEMORIAL. CHRISTCHURCH, December 17. Advice bus been received in Christchurch that Dr K. It. Kuibrcc, ol tbcItockcfoller Foundation, who was recently in Christchurch, has arranged with the University of Melbourne that Dr I). B. Copland. Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Commerce in the University, shall mi as the representative of the Laura Spellman Rockefeller Memorial in Australia. This is one of Ibe foundations oi John D. ltockclciter and is devoted to the encouragement of economic and social research. The intention is that American students
shall be given fellowships to study economic and social development in Australia under the direction of Dr Copland, and that similar fellowships shall be available for Australian students to .study in the United Slates. In order to facilitate the invitation of the se] onv ihe Memorial has invited Dr Copland to vi-it the United States and Canada, and possibly Fngland, in order to study the teaching of economies in the important universities of those countries, lie will lie away for about six months and will be the guest of | lie Memorial from the time be leaves Melbourne, lie will consult with the autboril ies of the Memorial concerning the selection of Australian fellows and the general administration of I lie scheme. Dr Copland received ids trainim- in economies at Canterbury College under Professor .1, Might. Ile graduated M.A. with first-class honours in economies in 1915 and after a short, period of service in the ofl'nv of the Government. Statistician, lie was appointed lecturer in Feuiioinies in the University of Tasmania, lie was soon raised jo 1 lie rank of Professor, and in 1921 was appointed the first professor of commerce in tin' University of .Melbourne. In HUM. also, lm gained the degree of D.Se. in Economics of Hie University of New /.calami for a series of studios in Australian currency and finance. It is understood that ilie Laura Spellman Rockefeller Memorial is contemplating the establishment of a similar connexion with New Zealand.
