[Australia & N.Z. Cable Association.] SELECTION OF TEST TEAMS. LONDON, Dee. 6. The “Evening News,” replying to MaeLaren, says it is wrong to select an international team to suit a captain. eontrawise, a captain should Ik? selected after the team. Unaccountable dislikes and preferontes exist in most sports and tlie captain might shelve a good man on the ground of liis lvcing temperamental, for which certain howlers were recently criticised. Nevertheless, a good tempered howler should not lie selected for match winning purposes. Ho should look aggressive. by which means, he often demoralises the batsmen. Kortright and Gregory, like all fast howlers, arc .sufficiently temperamental, and look to be aggressive. Men savagely bent on winning are not particularly amiable companions. The Australians outstanding feature, whether they be placers or selectors. Is keenness. English cricketers are often slack, and seem to prefer a picnic to : t icket while the selectors sec too little of cricket.
The “Sunday Herald” points out that England’s test captain needs more than enthusiasm, which is Gillignn’s chief asset. It urges that the probable team, with a new captain, should he assembled in May. playing continuously, enabling cohesion. This would interfere with the championship. hut County cricket is immaterial in view of the keenness of the AngloAustralian struggle for supremacy, thus providing the most interesting season in the history of the game.
