REMOVAL OF A LICENSE

■ —flE* Q O* OPPOSED- AT AUCKLAND

[llY TELCO RACK—PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.! AUCKLAND, Dee. 2.

Applications for the issue of a publican's license for the Thames Hotel and for its removal to new premises on the waterfront were opposed at the meeting of the Licensing Committee todav.

Mr Finlay, for AH AV. E. T. Grigsby. the applicant, said that AD .Tames Gkeson. IHo owner, had paid £23,000 for the building, and £IO.OOO would ho spent on renovation and about £SOOO on furnishings. The license c“ £3OOO. so that altogether approximately £II,OOO was invested. If the. applications were refused, it would menu financial ruin for AH Gleeson. He had heard it said that an hotel in Quay St. would he a temptation to sailors and wharf employees. YCas not that a juke? Was there a sailor or wharf labourer who does not know there is an hotel further up the street? ‘‘Are eve to believe,’’ lie asked, “that these men are so lacking in. moral fibre that they could not resist the sight of a hotel ?”

Air AlcVoagh. for petitioners who are opposing the applications, maintained that the committee was not competent to grant the removal of the license, as it expired last .June, and was now non-existent. The present Thames Hotel provided no accommodation except for liar and convenience premises. Therefore it did not comply with the requirements of the I.iconsing Act, and ii was impossible, in the circumstances, for the Committee to grant a license or the renewal of one. All that the purchaser had at stake was the £3OOO Paid for the license, because the building would still be worth what was paid for it- Air Gleofon knew it was just a gamble, and he had done everything with lii.s eyes open just as ojieii as if lie had .gone to Ellerslio and put £IOO on the tote. Seamen and men engaged on the wharves would he tempted to go awav from work, and the work of the port would he retarded. The likelihood of accidents arising from carelessness would he aggravated if liquor was brought to the very door of the waterfront. The hearing was adjourned until tomorrow, i
