CORRESPONDENCE.

AN APPEAL. (To the Editor.) .Sir, —To-morrow afternoon the ItokitiKa Beautifying Society is again usiiiug for help to enable it to carry ua its work. During 1 lie past three years about 111.1.u.1 lias been expended by the Borough l ouncil and the Society, in etlec.liug improvements, and beautifying t'ass and Ataeandrew Squares, and I venture to Miggest that no public expenditure in Hofiitika has been more generally approved. Cas-, Square is now not only a most central and convenient Sports’ Ground,

imt has become more and more to be recognised as the “ peoples’ park,” while Maeandrew Square is beginning to look worthy of its honoured name. Again Cass Square during the summer months is the most popular of all West Coast centres, for the holding of picnics or excursions. This is demonstrated by the number of gatherings that are held on the ground. Alv object in penning these lines is tu enable mo to appeal to the people to liberally patronize the Fair to-mor-row to enable money to he raised, so that further improvements can he effected.

It has been said that the entire responsibility for the work should he undertaken by the Borough Council. I desire, however, to point out, that no matter how willing the council may be to accept its responsibility in this connection. the amount of funds at their disposal is necessarily limited. This aspect ol the ease is recognised in Christchurch. New Plvmouth and other larger cent res than Hokitika. Beautifying Societies exist for the purpose of co-operating with the local authorities in suefi work as litis been done by our society. The Hokitika Borough Council has really done as much as can he expected, and hv their co-operation have inspired the society and the citizens generally to take an increasing interest in the line grounds referred to. They are certainly among the town’s most valuable assets. In the past the people have responded to every appeal we have made, and I leel sure they will do so again tomorrow. I am. etc.. 11. L. MICHEL. l’resident 1i.8.5. Hokiiika. 21ith Nov.. 11125.
