The Riinanga Bowling Club will open their green on Saturday. Nov. 28th. and has extended an invitation to members of the local Club to participate.

The Mayor lias proclaimed a. public holiday for to-morrow afternoon from 2 p. ill . 100 p.iil. and requests the <il izens to observe it as such, in eonm(ion with the Beautifying Society’s ~-nla day on Cass Square.

Everything is in good trim, lor the gala day on Cass Square to-morrow in aid of the Hokitika Beautifying Society. Admission for adults will he one shilling and a splendid programme will lie got off. The hand will he in attendance and discourse a special programme. The Baby Parade will he a central feature. Judging is to begin a 2.15 o’clock, and the prizes will he presented at the close of the competition. Sports will he in progress all the afternoon. There will he also a cooking demonstration with gas in tho refreshment room, where afternoon lea will he served. The judging for the rake competition will take place at 2.30 o’clock, after which the exhibits will he sold for the benefit of the fund. The town will observe a holiday from ■2 to 5 o’clock to-morrow afternoon.

Yarious rumours were current in Wellington on Wednesday in the public service that, a number of retirements, including those of certain heads of Departments. were immediately pending. Inquiries elicited that it was generally ex] acted in the service that the practice which is in force in tho Railways and l’ost and Telegraph Departments by which officers, on reaching forty years of service, are to he compulsorily retired would he followed in the general public service. ft has been ascertained that what is known as the forty year rule is not considered wholly applicable to the general public service, that a numlier of officers who have completed forty vears' service will receive notice of retirement in the near future, and that that policy will he generally tallowed.
