BOOT FACTORY .BURNT. TIMAHU, November 11. A lire last night did extensive damage to Ihe premises ol Anderson and Coy, hoot manufacturers of Christchurch. The outbreak was discovered a 1 9.5(1. when the Haines had a stronghold. and. being fanned by a strong wind, the flames continued the work of destruction, uespite the efforts of the brigade. Before il was suppressed i great amount of damage was done. The stock was highly inflammable and burnt fiercely. Much damage was done to the machinery by the lire and
water hut it is impossible to assess the amount at present, whilst the stock suffered heavily, the whole being reduced to debris. The fire will throw a ennsiderahie number out of employment. and a considerable time must elapse before business can he resumed.

BOOK-MAKERS FINED. AUCKLAND, November 13
At the Police Court, William George Brown was lined C2O on each of two charges of laying tntalisalor odds. Brttwn’s appeal against conviction in a previous ease had been disallowed and he was serving sentence of thirty-two days’ imprisonment. Chief Detective Cummings said ho was satisfied (hat if Brown or his counsel had their way they would have pleaded guilty, but he was sure that there was a very strong organisation at the hack of them which urged them to plead not. guilty and fight the mater out.
