THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.
Woiti.n Population
The less civilised sections of the human races are increasing the most rapidly, and Sir Loo Chiozza Money has stated in a recent puhlicaiion that, ‘'owing to the relative infertility of the white races, civilisation is in imminent peril of being swamped hy barbarism.” Much has been written of late about the “rising tide of colour.” and the ex-Kaiser, from his place of exile, has uttered another Warning about the Asiatic peril. The British Empire includes so many peoples that the question is of more than passing interest.

The decision of two farmers at Inglewood to convert their dairy I arm into a sheep run owing- to the prevalence of ragwort points once more t<> the widespread extent of the pest (says the Unworn "Star”). It is well known that there are many farms infested with ragwort in the heart of the rich dairying country of South laranakjj. It must be assumed that in these cases it would not pay to take the same action, hut it would surely lie good policy to go in for a number of sheep to run with tbe cows when they could be concentrated on the weed paddock. It is generally recognised, and has been stated by men of experience that a few sheen on every dairy farm are a good asset.

A tire at 5 o'clock on Sunday morning at Westport, destroyed a fourroomed house, used a.s a fowl house and incubator slu'd, on the premises of All N. Solomon. Brougham Street. AH' and Mrs Solomon and family wore not aware of the fire until they were awakened hy firemen knocking at tlveit door, ihe alarm, having been given by Mr Frank Afcbcan, night watchman. The tire had a. good hold when the Brigade arrived and from some unforseen cause, there was a little delay in getting a satisfactory ffow of water, *but when the full pressure .was available, the (lames were quickly beaten out. Air Solomon, however, suffered a heavy loss, as there were in the destroyed building three incubators, containing a total of 500 eggs, those in two of tho incubators being due- to batch on Sunday morning. Several pigeons, classical birds, also a Black Orpington cockerel of well-bred class, were also destroyed in the fire. Fortunately, there was no wind at the time and the fire did not extend to the residence of Afr Solomon, a slight siorching being the only evidence of the fire shown on the *ide of the building. Air Solomon had insurances of £llO on the building and incubators (£SO buildings and £6O incubators and equipment), but the insurances will not nearly cover tho losses
