Every performer employed at general theatrical performances shall he paid £1 a week for six performances, and 12s for •each matinee. Performers tat permanent vaudevilles, or variety shows £.') 15s a week, of seven performances, and 12s for each matinee after the first. Performers at permanent picture entertainments (non-continuous) shall be paid at the rate ol not less than L'.'t lOs for six performances, averaging not more, than two and n-qiinrlcr hours for each performance, Os for the first matinee and 12s for each subsequent matinee in each week. Rehearsals shall not exceed two hours each week. In the case of picture theatres, which do not show regularly six nights a week performers shall he paid pro rata at the weekly rates provided for permanent picture theatres, which are defined as those screening the same programme or portion thereof more than twice daily; also for card parties, concerts, dances and assemblies, refreshment rooms and hotels, skating rinks, ot". Overtime is to he paid for at the rate of 5s an hour. Performers at all benefit entertainments are to ho paid lor at award rates but the whole or any portion of the fee may he handed to the fund at the discretion of the performer. FOUND SHOT. PUK EJCOfI E. Nov. 5. Frederick Kitllewell, resident of Bombay, was found shut. At the inquest the verdict was one of suicide with a shotgun during temporary insanity.
INCENDIARISM SUSPECTED. AUCKLAND. Nov. 5. The house of Stephen Vella, which escaped destruction at Riverhead on Tuesday night, when his wine press was burned, was totally destroyed by lire last night. The house was unoccupied and was insured for £IOO. Vella estimates his loss at £3OO to ,C*l(lt> and says that both liras were caused by iucondiarisis.
UNANIMOUS CALL. CHRISTCHURCH, November G. The Rev. John Miller of Sc. Clair, Dunedin, has received a unanimous call to the Papanui Presbyterian ('hut ch. LORRY AND TRAIN COLLIDE. WELLINGTON. November 0. An empty motor lorry, driven by the owner. Mr Boyd, was struck by i train at Pel one level crossing. The lorry was badly damaged. Boyd had stopped while a shunting ■ngine passed and then had his atton- ' ion fixed on a train approaching from the city as he restarted his vehicle, «o that he did not notice another train •timing from the llutt on the down 'ino and though, on becoming aware if it. he swerved, it was too late to ivnid a collision. Boyd escaped injury.
LIBEL ACTION. AUCKLAND. Nov. 0. The action claim of £.500(1 damages for alleged libel by John Igimtns Fox against William Goidl'cllow was resumed at the Supreme Court this morning. Sir John Eiiulav. in opening the case for the delem-c. said lie bad never known a case in which a limn had brought into court Ids reputation and asked a jury to assess the damage done to it by alleged slander, and vet shrinked from going into the witness box himself. Sir John Findlay read a letter written to Ooodfellow by William Banstead and said they had reasonable grounds to believe the statements made in that letter were true. Throe witnesses for plaintiff had stated on oath that Gixtdfollow had not been actuated by malice and that he had been quite sincere. The whole ease showed a comolete absence of malice and bona Tides. Counsel asked for a non-suit on the charge of slander.
On the grounds of law points his Honour reserved his decision. William Rnnstcnd. farmer, of Rng’•tn, in evidence admitted writing the 'offer mentioned. Tie admitted had known the letter would he published he would have framed it differ•ntly. hut the facts were there.
