FIFTY MILE CYCLE RACE. GISBORNE. October 22

Thu fifty mile amateur cycling road championship of Xcw Zealand was decided in-day. The weather was overcast-, with a head wind for the first nineieeii miles of the second lap. The lirst lap was over a course about 12 miles, die competitors returning and 1 lion setting out on tho second lap, of about thirty eight mites. There were live starters in the championship O. Fleet (AVellington), A. W. Wray (Canterbury), At. Algie, F. Herbert and J. Douglas (Gisborne). In conjunction with the championship, a handicap race was run. with ten starters.

After going six miles, Douglas punctured and fell out. On turning for the second lap, Wray was in the lt.mil in ihe championship men. one length ahead of Flett. following Algie and Herbert. The four men turned practically together at Tekaraka, and remained in a bunch til! a mile irom home. Here Herbert and Flett drew out. Three hundred yards Irom, the tape Herbert sprinted, and secured a two-lengths lead, which lie retained [ill the post was passed. Algie being twenty yards back third and Wray a similar distance away fourth. Herbert's time was 2.35.0. Flett's 2.35.9 2-5. and Algie’ 8 2.35.12.
