It is being prepared for a voyage ol twenty thousand miles to lest its capacity for lone \ oyages. and also to test hygenie conditions for the crew in tropical waters. The submarine will probably go to Singapore, following the example ol Jv2(>. It will lie the largest submarine in the world, displacing 3G9P tons, almost equalling a (' class light cruiser, 'file submarine will be last enough to accompany the fleet while cruising, hut its speed is a secret. It lias lour powerful guns and the cost is already .1191 ID,(100. The second novelty D the cruiser Emerald, which will shortly he commissioned. She was laid down in 191' and was specially designed to outstrip the fastest cruisers which Germany was then building. The speed aimed at was thirty-five knots, entailing machinery with tremendous power and extra boilers. Therefore, the propcllinir plant occupies most of the hull. The turbines develop eighty thousand horse power and the cruiser is expected to reach a speed ol thirty-live knots, being the swiftest cruiser afloat. Accompanied by her sister ship, the Enterprise, she will serve with the fOnst Indies squadron, of which the flagship will lie the Klttnghnm. These tine cruisers constitute a high speed division and will be aide to reinforce the China squadron at three days notice.
