Commencing last Sunday, importaii eoucessioiis have been made to seconi division members of the Railway service. which will to a certain extent secure some of the privileges lost during the 192-1 strike. The Railway Board, with the concurrence of the Minister of Railways has agreed that, guards, porters (witl the exception of tablet porters), shunters. signalmen, storemen and train
examiners are to re-eive time and a quarter tor all time worked lietween tin' hours of 1(1 p.m. mill C n.m. This is a reinslat-enient of the night rates which were lost after the strike, and i- regarded by the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants as a very tangible benefit. The society, in negotiation with the management, was also sueessful in securing double time for all time worked on Sundays. fn addition, the difficulty due to intermittent working of short periods will he overcome by providing that- railwayman called on duty are to he paid a minimum of four hours. INCREASED WAGES R E FUSED. It is understood that the Amalgamated Society made a strong request for an all-round increase of wages of Is I’d per day. which they contend iin accordance with the statistical position of the cost of living compared with ihi' position when this nnioun! was taken off the men'- wages by ihe operation ol the Public Expenditure Adiu-i merit Act. The Government however, firmly declined t-i cnn-idcr increases of wages until the financial results of the new railway police have been tested.
