Secretary of the Seamen’s Strike ■Committee, state.- that hundreds of seamen have obtained empjloyment in and around Sydney since the strike commenced. He expressed the opinion that, this number would increase unless a settlement was reached soon. Should this happen, lie says, the owners will have to engage Australian seamen at their own rates. Although the owner’s oiler has not been adopted by the strikers as n whole the leaders admit that a considerable number have returned to their ships. On two or three vesselin the stream the complements are not far short of the original crews. It is stated a number of the men who have returned are naval ratings, who fear, in the event of a conviction that they "ill he automatically deprived id' any pen-ion to which they are entitled. \t Newcastle warrant- have boon issued for the avro-t of the white member- of the ire" of the steamer Min who struck. The overseas shipping companies whose vessels are involved in the firesent seamen’s strike intimated to-day that in view of the lact that the men on strike had refused the owners' offer to lorego all penalties if work were resumed on Saturday last, if had been decided to commence prosecutions against the men. 3he companies consider that the offer they made was a generous one, and a lioiinfide effort to bring about a speedy settlement.
