[BY TELEGRAPH —TER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] THE COUNCIL. WELLINGTON, Sept. 2. ’The Legislative Councii met at 2.30 to-day. Leave of absence of illness was granted to Sir James Carroll, for I-l days, to Hon. Izard for 7 days, to Hon Alison for 7 days and Hon. Stewart for -I days. Otago Presbyterian Church Board id Property Amendment Bill and Alarine and Power Engineers Institute Incorporation Bill were each read a soecud time and referred to committee or selection. Nurses and Alidwives Registration Bill. National Provident Flint! Amendment Bill and Land for Settlements Bill were received from the House. Tho two former were read nfirst time and the latter was read a first time and second time pro forma and referred to tho Lands Commute -.
On fhe motion of Hon. A!. Cohen, the following motion was passed : —Tintt attention of the Government he called to the. desirability of amending ike existing law oil the subject by compelling defaulting husbands to make more effective provision than new obtains for the maiiitemin'e of their wives and families. Speaking to (lie motion Sir Francis Hell said that instructions had already hcui given lor the preparation of a Bill amending the maintenance orders. The passing cl the motion, he said would probably hasten the appearance of the Bill .
Alatainata County Council Empowering Bill was put through tho final stages and passed. On the motion of Sir T. AlacKonzie the Council recorded its opinion Dint measures should be taken while not involving Government in financial loss, for reopening tho incomparable grandeur of the South AVest Fiords ol Otago. The Council adjourned at 4.35 until 2.30 to-morrow. THE HOUSE. The House met at 2.30. The afternoon sitting was occupied with consideration of reports of Alines and Public Health Departments. At the evening sitting, the Electric Power Boards Bill. Electric AViremeus Registration Hill and Life Insurance Amendment Bill were read a- second time. The Electric Power Board Bill was passed through committee stage during which Air Savage endeavoured to have the clause of the franchise in election of lioavd changed from ' a repaver” to “elector” but. this was defeated by 42 to 17. The Bill wasthon passed and tho House rose at 11.50.
