I am very loath to give up niv seat in the Valley where I was horn, and where so many friend# have loyally assisted me for 'so Ion?, hut felt that under the present circumstances, that if it was the belief of my Executive and friends that the seal could be more surely held for our party by the choice of another man. then in that case any claims I might have had would immediately be forgotten by me in the decision of savin? the seat for our side. 1 hoj>e that the result of the election in the Hutt will help to bring about a strong and stable Government for New Zealand, a Government of purposeful men. with progressively liberal ideas, to meet tne changing times, and changing conditions. I thank you all for the confidence vou have in me. and can assure von that I shall never forget your manv kindnesses to me and to mine m the past, and with every wish lor the success of the National Patty.
