sections of the Sewell St. drain, the largest of Hi© three breaks occurring at the corner of ihe Government buildings where a twelve foot length of tho side collapsed, causing the road surface to fall in. Tho cleaning out of the. drain from Sewell St .through to the north town boundary has been satisfactorily carried out by casual labourers working at price rates. The work has been completed for the sum of £l2 which is £7 10s less than tho tender received for that work. Both sides of Stafford St. from Rolleston St. to Livingstone St. have been cleared of gorse and other growth. A new drain has been made and Din. earthenware pipes laid on Wold St. for a distance of 4 chains 15ft. The pipes have also been laid on the east side of Tailored St. 2 chains 2ft. north of Weld St. These two drains will now carry the storm water into the Tailored' St. ISiu. drain, and will be of great assistance in keeping the same thoroughly scoured out. The question of repairs to the Town Clock was treated as a matter of urgency. The metal structure was found to tic in a very had condition and wooden supports Gin, x Gin. have been placed in each corner in such a manner as to support the angle irons which carry the weight of the clock mechanism. These repairs will insure ihe safely of the dock for some considerable time. The manufacture of ]Bin. concrete pipes has ceased and it has also been found necessary to reduce the casual stall' by three. Preparations are being made for the erection ot the tar distilling plant. 1 have also acted as supervisor of the painting of the Public Library. A four-inch earthenware pipe dram has been laid front the Taucred St. Tint in across to the property occupied hv Mr D. Dowell. The sexton has been engaged during the month in cleaning paths, and in preparing new ground. Burials tor the month of July. 8. Received. From Manager of Abattoirs (J. Jarman) reporting for month of July there were examined : —J-t cows, 22 heifers, 72 bullocks, 271 sheep, 19 lambs, 3 pigs. 1 I calves. Condemned, 2 cows. 1 bullock, I sheep. Fees for period £7G (is (last year £7(l 2s). Received. In connection with the repairs to the Town Clock tower, it was stated that further work was required. Mr Evans moved that the. Overseer report as to the cost tlicreof. Mr Blank objected, stating the PuhIj,. Works Committee should he asked to report. The Mayor said that it was all the same. He suggested that- the Public Works Committee he asked to report and then ultimately the Overseer would report through theta. Mr Evans nrcepterl the suggestion which was agree I to. A discussion took place in connection with the Free Library, it being stated that tho water was still coming down the walls when heavy rain fell, and that it tins apparently due to the water soaking through the concrete walls. The Overseer recommended painting the cement- work and this was approved, being referred to the Library C'ommiUce for attention.
