The extraordinary steps a thief will take to procure money was evidenced on a recent Saturday night in t'>e tidephone box at the entrance to the Auckland railway station (says the “Star”). The thief entered the box and after removing the electric globe prised open the lid of the telephone and abstracted the cash box. Considerable damage was done to the instrument. but the mechanism was not injured.
A Napier resident went to Wanganui to purchase a certain make of motorcar. which is not represented on the market in his own’town. On completing the purchase he engaged a local expert to drive the car hack' to Napier (states the "i’overty Bay Herald”). However, when Daimevirke was reached the owner, somewhat confident in consequence ot studying lus driver, decided that lie could complete the journey unassisted. Ihe car was left ill a garage overnight. The amateur driver took charge in tile morning and endeavoured to leave tin* gaiage. hut ill doing so unwittingly ignored the main exit. He accelerated bis engine and came into violent collision with all obstinate wall. completely folding up the bonnet and engine of a £SOO purchase. The unlucky owner had not covered the car by insurance against accident.
A bricklayer was (barged at the Wanganui Magistrate's Conn with working at his trade on Sunday. June (it 1 1 .. in view of a public place (reports th,v “Herald”). The. senior-sergeant stated that when spoken to by a constable defendant (cased operations. The work "as in front of his own house. The defendant said that as it was his own place he thought he could do as he liked. S.AI. : “Were you improving your own homer - “Yes. S.AI. : “It is an oll'ciicc. ami probably the object is to prevent annoyance and preserve the sentiment of others, and no doubt urges the best thing for all is to preserve a day ol rest.” He remarked to delendaiit that it was perI'ccHy pcrmisHlile for him to work in his garden on Sunday providing that he was not a professional gardener.
“ft is permissible for me to lay bricks on Sunday, hut not so for you.” added the Alagistrate. The S.M. -said that the case would he a warning so he then convicted defendant and ordered him to pay costs 7s Id.
